Pogs and Slammers

Scan 5

We spent much of this weekend lounging around the apartment listening to music we loved in the 90s. Death’s Head grew up in a small town in the Willamette Valley, while I spent my teen years setting fires behind garages in big industrial Russian cities, but we listened to a lot of the same music because we were clearly meant for each other (but probably more because of globalization and the fact that our tastes were not particularly refined). Not all of our musical preferences overlapped, though, so today we had fun putting together a soundtrack of our combined teenage years.

The resulting mix is a random sampling of the good, the bad, and the ugly (and mostly the ugly) of the 90s music scene. I still have two ears and a heart, so I love most of the selected songs unconditionally, and I probably won’t respond to reason, so forget about trying to make me see the light.

A couple of things to note: I think the mix sounds best on “shuffle,” since we just randomly added the songs in the order we thought of them. The mix is named after the 90s playground phenomenon of Pogs. Mine were once confiscated by Mrs. Paine, the lunchlady, and I felt both angry and embarrassed. Such a traumatic decade!

P.S. Bonus points if you can guess which songs were DH’s picks and which were mine (although most were both, so good luck to you!).

P.P.S. DH ran track in the late nineties. Wasn’t he a looker?

Annnnnnd just like that I’m in tenth grade again… (I’m guessing DH’s contributions are the rap/hip-hop ones?) If I suddenly start wearing men’s flannel shirts and chewing my nails again you’re taking the blame, just so we’re clear.

Don’t worry, I fully take the blame. And yes, DH listened to much more rap and hip-hop than I did. He also listened to significantly less Lisa Loeb and Jewel than I did. :)
